Trek through the country side – Day trip

Starts from – Bentota

Starting time 6 AM from the Bentota by public transport (Bus) for about 35-40 km to reach a village in the Singharaja Forest area. Approximately 2½ hours of walk through the natural rocky path, surrounded by colorful range of mountains covered with indigenous and endemic plants and fauna of this Paradise Island.

You will experience the legendary eco friendly life style of a pleasant remote village, unspoiled by modern concrete buildings or lifestyle, which helps to protect the wonders of nature as it is. You will have the opportunity of dipping into chilled fresh water ponds as well.

Finally, visit a decade old Buddhist Temple arriving through a hard rocky path to reach a Buddhist monastery, where the monks keep themselves away from the busy world in meditating in order to get rid of one’s lust and desire to attain Nibbana.

Return to Bentota in the evening in a Tuk Tuk trishaw ride.

Little Adam’s Peak, village and brief garden by Bicycle – Day trip

Start at 7 Am from Bentota and cross the Bentota-River on ferry and enter the country side passing through and experience the best of Sri Lankan lifestyle, paddy fields, farmers, birds, animals like water-buffalos. Thereafter climb a rock for about 45 minutes to arrive at the top where an old temple with a Beautiful view awaits! Villages call this Little Adam’s Peak.

Then cycle to famous Brief garden, used to be the home of Mr. Bavis Bawa – Sri Lanka’s famed and beloved artist. The house is open for the Public and although it‘s distinctive style is an attraction in itself, the art work on display is quite eclectic and includes mural drawings, paintings, artifacts, statues and a garden filled with paradoxes and illusions.

The garden itself covers 2 hectares and is absolutely beautiful.

Trekking trip to Poththa Buddhist Monastry – Day trip

The journey will start at the dawn of the day, the initial 25 kms of our outing travelling in a Tuk-Tuk. There onwards, we will begin to set on foot, a trekking that will last for 2 hours or so, through a jungle path passing a remote village. You will get to experience firsthand the livelihood of the village folks and their simplistic / minimalistic life style and what revolves around them. You will also be treated with sights of local fauna such as porcupines or mongooses which are very likley to come about on our way arriving at the Monastary.

Budhist Monks do not cook food but rely on meals that are given to them by the buddhist followers. In the case of monastaries such as this, placed away from human interactions; devotees take turns in coming and staying for a day or two to cook and offer the 2 meals the monks require for a day. Whilst at the Monastary, you can experience and learn the fundamentals of Buddhist Beleifs as well as the fundamentals of Buddhist Monastic life.

Cycling and Trekking trip to Pahana Buddhist Monastery – Day trip

This is a trip to a Buddhist Monastery placed on top of a rock. We will arrive at the destination by Bicycles and start ascending the rock enjoying many great views. We will stop at certain points to enjoy and appreciate the scenery. These Buddhist Monasteries are set up differently to that of other general Buddhist temples. The monks live an extremely simplistic life style and mingles very less with the lay people. They dedicate most of the time on meditation which could last from days to weeks or months.

This particular monastery posses a sacred ‘bo‘ tree (asathu tree) to which the local villages pay homage to and make wishes for any good health or to wish their sicknesses to cure faster.

We will spend our time at the Monastry exploring its sourroundings and meanwhile learning the fundamentals of Buddhism and details about monastic life of Buddhist monks of the Theravada sector.
